Abstract:

This project is an attempt to combine metaphor
with three-dimensional furniture design. The project starts with three of the
basic seven plots, as part of an ongoing project to illustrate all seven. Most
of my projects to date have been about social design. In these projects, the
design is a problem solving or finding tool. Here I enquire into the
development of visual language and how to reflect my narrative.
The aim is to explore the potential of three-dimensional design to engage with
narrative and to develop my capacity for finding form. It is experimental and
outside my comfort zone. Inspired at the start by Nendo's 50 Manga chairs, (see
image) I extend the project to incorporate the idea of the Seven Basic Plots.

	Abstract

So many products and experiences around us are designed to speed people up. Inspired by the biodegradable ‘Chandelier’ designed by Icelander Katrin Svana Eythórsdóttir, the project proposes that we need products and services which highlight and hinder this fast movement and get people to rethink time. It uses epiphyllum flowers as a visual metaphor and feeds from these theoretical positions by considering the ideas of ‘consciousness’ and ‘narrative’ within visual responses.


	“How can I inspire an appreciation for the moment; to slow down time, through 3D design in various scales?”


	‘Time is only a reflection of change. From change, our brains construct a sense of time as if it were flowing.’As Julian Barbour suggest, all the ‘evidence we have for time is encoded in static configurations, which we see or experience subjectively, all of them fitting together to make time seem linear.’

	Since the desk clock is small in size, it would be easier to control if the petals rotate together with the shaft.

	The Kinetic Sculpture

	The Epiphyllum clock is a contemplative installation that tells time through slow petal movements. Wind power and human force are used to ‘check’if the petals can rotate. Through a series of visual and tactile clues, observers are encouraged to ‘calculate’ the time and to contemplate time’s meaning in relation to the natural world.

	Abstract

This is an inside-out wardrobe. The onus is on the user to maintain a suitable amount of joy-sparking garment and to keep the total collection in check.

We are constantly reminded of the limited resources on the planet, yet we are struggling with the stressful living spaces contributed by the unused cluttered objects. More responsible consuming behavior and mindset such as ‘断捨離 (dannshari)’ should be advocated.

	Design insight
	The aim of this project was to bring together the phenomena of overconsumption and minimal lifestyles into some kind of harmonious relationship. The project started as an attempt to reformulate wardrobe storage into a system that would enable users to not only visualize the contents of the wardrobe but also allow them to see the disproportionate ratio of clothes that were worn and not worn.

	AbstractThis project was initiated from exploring the site: No.14th and No.20th of the Fan Garden—my grandparents’ old residence. After field trips and investigations, I focused on the topic: record daily life through material change. 


Through the melting and color blending of a wax-made table surface, the traces of daily dinner time of a family is recorded. This was an opportunity to explore materials and human behavior, then apply them to different scenarios and scales. Through materials, I tried to provoke recollection, conversations, reflection, and visualizing (materializing) time right in front of users.

	AbstractFW Concrete 2022 was the result of a series of material explorations involving concrete as a primary medium. Widely considered one of the oldest building materials in modern history, concrete is oftentimes associated with very specific, somewhat limiting traits–rigidity and strength, but also coldness and brutalism. 


In playing with its composition and ingredients (which, in typical applications, consists of a 1:3:2:1 ratio of portland cement, gravel, sand, and water), FW Concrete 2022 takes these associations and flips them on their head. Here, concrete is turned “military-inspired high fashion” and made somewhat flexible, all the while retaining its original protective properties.


This project trys to connect concrete with ‘clean’, ‘glossy’, ‘lightweight’, ‘flexible’, ‘colorful’, ‘wearable’ and other traits people hardly associate with this material.

This piece was exhibited at the 2023 RISD Graduate
Industrial Design Biennial, during March 17-April 9, 2023.

	Concrete is a combination of PORTLAND CEMENT (1): GRAVEL (3): SAND (2) : WATER (1).
At the beginning of the project, different material were used to replace a certain component of the concrete.

	Abstract


People deserve a well-designed end of life just like every part of their lives before that.
It is important to be in charge of it and have options other than lying in hospital beds.
Under the background which dying with dignity (using euthanasia drugs) is legal with permission from doctors, the project aims to design beyond the experience of dying with pills to sharing a final meal and ritual with loved ones.
 Design outcome: A farewell café, which provides 1) the bucket list menu, 2) the memorial planning menu and 3) euthanasia cakes for ordering and customize making (5 cake design trials).

	Why choose cakes:

--People should have something good and warm to look forward to even at the end of life.

--Sweets and desserts are limited to control weight during life, but at the end of life, it is time to leave these restrictions behind and think less rationally and fulfill our wishes.

--Having dessert at the end of a meal feels elegant and complete for an ending. It is a similar idea to having a good ending for a lifetime.


A）The Cake of Life

Ingredients: Apple jam (green), cream, spinish, haw candy (for hero/heroine)

The idea: Leaves are representation of life, and at the end of life, bears fruit.

The idea: Death breaks the bonds as well as resctrictions, and return to your authentic self.

	Abstract

A full scale rocking swing chair with hard maple wood. 

Various techniques were used including chopsaw, joiner, planer, bansaw, router, domino, hand shaping, finishing etc were used to shape solid real wood into a chair.


When I was a child,
A swing was my dream.

But there’s no roof beam in my house,
So I had to give up.

Last winter,
I swang in a park for hours,
Not wanting to leave.

I now have the hands of a maker,
Why not fulfill the child's dream?

The following is my detailed documentation and notes of the making process of my first-ever full-scale wood project. It talks about how two gigantic logs of wood were turned into the final piece,&#38;nbsp; and how the engineering drawing was turned into a swing I love spending time on.

Tucker the instructor was concerned about the structure.
I was also concerned.
So I made a full-scale works-like model.
The model was steady enough (despite the wood-creaking sound). I identified several problems that needed improvement.

	3. Refine the design

	4. Material calculation

I tried to calculate how many pieces of wood I need and how to arrange them in an economical way.

	5. Buying maple wood

We went to the local lumber yard, where I found some decent maple wood. I was glad about making material calculations first so that the 12 feet piece can be cut down on site, which was easier to carry.

I was surprised at how different the wood looks like after going through these machines. The color is much lighter, (surprisingly similar to the render texture), and the surfaces are much smoother.

Printing full-scale templates was harder than I thought.
But templates were helpful when it comes to arranging how pieces are placed with each rectangular block.

Dominos are similar to mortise and tenon joints. The brich wood dominos would expand in the slot when they meet glue and fix two parts tightly together.
Always practice on a scrap piece. Always make the pencil marks very clear.

Despite being very careful, The domino holes were not perfect. Luckily the shapes were not cut so I can always adjust the drawing of shapes to be cut on the wood easily.
The pieces were able to fit tightly but were not perfectly aligned.&#38;nbsp; But this can be addressed.

To adjust according to some slight misalignment of domino holes, the dominos were sanded slightly so that all pieces align perfectly. Dominos have good flexibility and tolerance for mistakes.

The middle bars could be fixed to the frames using glue. However, I chose to use screws so that the chair can be disassembled for easy transportation.


The original plan was to cover screws with plugs, so for each hole, I drilled with a drill bit for plugs, predrilled with a drill bit of the same size as the screw, and then drill the screw.
The plugs will be attached after I send the chair back home.

Nylon ropes can be cut with a heated knife. A hole of the exact diameter of the rope can be hard to pull the rope through, but the fit is tight and no gaps would be seen.

Observing
	Let’s observe this creature and get to know more about them.


The pet chair is one of the many extant species of furniture. The pet chairs live mostly indoor but they can adapt to a variety of environment such as gardens and balconies. Some are hard and looks like wood, but some are softer and more furry. They are similar in appearance to stools and children’s chair.&#38;nbsp;
A grown pet chair is generally 20 inches tall and 10 inches long. They usually weigh about 3 to 5 pounds. Despite their small size, they are strong to hold the weight of an adult. But they do have limits, try not to over burden them.

This pet chair is a tame and slow creature, and very friendly to human. It is often seen standing by itself and being absent in mind, and hardly moves. But it actually has rich body and facial language.

Here is one comming towards us, he seems to be in a mood. The pet chair tends to be angry when someone sit on him but moves a lot. This is bad for his ankles.

By obvserving its’ gesture, it seems someone sat on him for too long. Although they love to be sat on but they can get tired sometimes.

The pet chair does not need to be walked like dogs. But they do pee like dogs, secretely. The good news is there is no smell, so no need to stop them.


Ideation
The starting point was to make interactive furniture (pick from desk, chair, closet, bed, lamp, storage cabinet, door, stool, etc) that 

either 1) has their own personality (want to be used in a specific way, 
or 2) is related to/ can interact one another, 
or 3)behave surprisingly, 
or 4)builds relationship with users like a family member, 
or 5) create a certain connection with user (emotional durable), 
or 6) tells stories in some way through themselves...

Inspired by the movie
‘Suzume’, 
in which the hero was turned into a chair that can walk. I decided to add anthropomorphic elements and physical movements onto furniture shapes.

Models of table, chair, desk lamp/ cushion and storage box were made with pine blocks and rubber bands.

Surpeised by how the people around react to the model, I wanted to maintain the playable element and not focus on the usability of the chair.&#38;nbsp;

The model is also good in that the chair express emotions with ‘body’ movement. The furniture also have the ability to respond to how the user treat it (eg. Its’&#38;nbsp;head will be lowered when user lean on the back).

I used plywood and shock cords for the full scale model. To reduce weight for achieveing best performance for the shock cord, I chose to make all the legs, seat and back hollow.
This process can be simplified using wood CNC.


1. Legs


Each leg is made of 4 layers of plywood with hollows in the middle. The shape of hollows enable the cord to slide through the leg easily.
The tightness of the shock cords can be adjusted through the hole under the legs. Extra cords can be contained in the leg.

	2. Head
	The head is made of 3 layers of plywood with cord tunnels in the middle. The cord can pass through easily.
The head is fit into a slot on the seat and can incline forward and backward.

	3. Seat
	

For safety, There are slots to fit the chair legs on the base of the seat when placing straight upwards so that the chair is steady for sitting.

	Soft covering &#38;amp; Upholstery
	A soft covering and seat cushion was made with some furry fabric and velcro straps. The coverings and facial expressions are optional and can be changed according to the preferences of the users.

The chair structure is steady for careful sitting in various directions, and able to make various poses and facial expressions.
